'Black tea' in China is also known as fermented tea or dark tea. It originates from China and was introduced to India and Sri Lanka by traders in the 19th century.

It is made from the leaves of the tea bush (Camellia sinensis) after the processes of withering, rolling, fermentation and drying. Black tea has a distinctly dark, malty flavor, a bit like a very light beer with no alcohol or acidity. It is a highly oxidized tea, so it will produce a dark red/orange colored brew.
